This course consists of the theoretical and practical aspects of basic nautical astronomy required to calculate, plot and maintain position and course. Topics covered in this course include:

- celestial spheres
- the solar system
- navigating in high latitudes
- the rising and setting of the sun
- determining a ship's position using:
- celestial bodies
- great circle sailing
- parallel, plane and mercator sailing
