Our vessel logistics teams keep Canadian Coast Guard ships running. They provide food and catering services and manage the ship’s inventory. They also help in emergencies, operations and drills.

Steward

Stewards provide hospitality services for our ship’s crew and passengers.

Duties

Some of a steward’s duties are:

• setting up and cleaning food service areas including:
  • pantries
  • dining rooms
  • mess rooms
• completing housekeeping services, like cleaning rooms and common areas
• assisting with:
  • serving meals
  • preparing food
  • storing operations

Like all crew members, stewards also participate in:

• firefighting operations
• evacuation procedures
• emergency and safety drills
• search and rescue and environmental response operations and drills

Requirements

To apply for a steward position, you must have:

• experience working in hospitality, including:
  • food service
  • janitorial services
  • professional housekeeping
  • steward services on a seagoing vessel
• a valid food safety certification

Classification and salary

• SC-STD-01
• Annual salary: $65,640 (more information about the ships’ crews rates of pay for stewards)

Cook

Cooks on our ships provide food and catering services to crew and passengers.

Duties

Some of a cook’s duties are:

• assisting the chief cook in:
  • planning the vessel’s menus:
    • cyclical
    • formal
    • special occasion
  • modifying recipes to suit the dietary needs of passengers and crew
  • preparing and cooking all food
  • storing of food
  • maintaining the galley and its equipment
• ensuring food safety and sanitation standards are met throughout the galley

Like all crew members, cooks also participate in:

• firefighting operations
• evacuation procedures
• emergency and safety drills
• search and rescue and environmental response operations and drills

Requirements

To apply for a cook position, you must:

• have experience working as a cook in:
  • hospitality
  • a restaurant
  • or an institutional setting
• have one of the following:
  • a cook certificate issued by a recognized institute
  • a Transport Canada Ship’s Cook Certificate
• meet language requirements specific to the particular position

Classification and salary

• SC-STD-03, SC-STD-04
• Annual salary: $69,240 to $71,496 (more information about the ships’ crews rates of pay for stewards)

Chief cook

Chief cooks on our ships provide food and catering services to crew and passengers.

Duties

Some of a chief cook’s duties are:

• planning the ship’s menus:
  • cyclical
  • formal
  • special occasions
• modifying recipes to suit the dietary needs of crew and passengers
• preparing and cooking all food
• supervising kitchen staff
• ensuring a high standard of food safety and sanitation throughout the logistics department areas, including:
  • galley accommodations
  • common areas
  • provisional storerooms
• managing supplies for the kitchen and general stores:
  • ordering
  • receiving
  • stowing
  • safeguarding
  • issuing
  • transferring
  • disposing

Like all crew members, chief cooks also participate in:

• firefighting operations
• evacuation procedures
• emergency and safety drills
• search and rescue and environmental response operations and drills

Requirements

To apply for a chief cook position, you must:

• have experience as a chef or assistant chef in:
  • hospitality
  • a restaurant
• or an institutional setting
• have a valid food safety certification
• have a valid Marine Basic First Aid certificate
• have one of the following:
  • a cook certificate issued by a recognized institute
  • a Transport Canada Ship’s Cook Certificate
• meet language requirements specific to the particular position
