The Canadian Coast Guard’s (CCG’s) Search and Rescue (SAR) program involves searching for, and providing assistance to, people, ships or other craft that are, or are believed to be, in imminent danger.
The CCG is part of a search and rescue network led by the Department of National Defence (DND). The network is made up of six federal departments and two volunteer groups.
The SAR network includes:
- three Joint Rescue Coordination Centres operated by the CCG and DND;
- two Maritime Rescue Sub-Centres operated by the CCG to provide additional communications, local knowledge and coordination services; and
- 41 SAR stations in critical locations to offer the best possible response to maritime SAR incidents.
These resources are complemented by:
- seven patrol vessels and any other CCG units in a given area; and
- the Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary (CCGA), a volunteer organization of approximately 4300 members and 1200 vessels.
