CCGS Teleost

Built in 1988 in Tomrefjord, Norway, the CCGS Teleost is used for offshore fisheries research and surveys in the Newfoundland and Labrador Region.

CCGS Teleost

Originally named Atlantic Champion, the vessel was extensively modified in 1994, and was re-named as a result of a contest for school children.  The winning name refers to the scientific term for a class of bony fish, which includes more than 20,000 species.

The CCGS Teleost carries out surveys and studies using large and small bottom and mid-water trawls, as well as a wide range of physical and fisheries oceanographic work.  Although its primary task is fisheries research, it can also perform search and rescue operations.

It is equipped with specialized trawl winches and cranes including an acoustic gantry crane, as well as scientific slip ring winches on the upper deck. It also has a staging area and a telescopic oceanographic boom, and carries a 23-foot fast rescue craft.

There is a wet laboratory on board, which contains a scientific freezer to store any samples collected and two large live storage tanks; the vessel has a dry laboratory, biology laboratory, oceanographic laboratory, and control/acoustic laboratory on board.

Navigational data is distributed and displayed throughout the vessel via electronic chart navigation systems.  The Teleost is also equipped with a roxann system, fishing sounder, scientific sonar and oceanographic echo sounder. It has an acoustic doppler current profile and sonar.  It is also equipped with instrumentation, hull-mounted and towed sensors and fisheries hydro-acoustic systems.

The Teleost is equipped with a full array of modern navigation and communications equipment.  There is one S-band and two X-band radar, three Differential Global Positioning System (DGPS) units, two radio direction finders, sonar and two deep-sea echo sounders.

The vessel has a crew of 20. And, at all times, at least one crewmember on board is a rescue specialist.
