Inshore Rescue Boat-North Program

The Canadian Coast Guard hires and trains students each summer to become members of an Inshore Rescue Boat (IRB) Crew. Students are trained in Search and Rescue (SAR) operations by Coast Guard regional staff and following successful completion of training, are assigned as Crew Members to IRB stations. Each station is staffed with two teams of four persons: one Supervisor and three Crew Members.

To apply to the IRB-North Program, you must be Inuit, and currently enrolled in a college, university, or other ongoing educational or training program; or, will be enrolling in a college, university or other ongoing educational or training program for the fall semester of 2018.

Once selected into this program, the candidate may participate in the program for up to two (2) seasons after the successful completion of their studies.

Candidates MUST meet the following criteria by March 31, 2018:

  1. Hold a valid Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) LEVEL C.
  2. Hold a valid standard First-Aid Certificate.

Please note: You do not need the above criteria to apply to this program.

As a condition of employment, candidates must also pass the following mandatory requirements:

  • successfully pass a Health Canada physical exam and a hearing exam (Health Evaluation Schedule)
  • meet the necessary security standard (National Security Investigation).
