Oceans Protection Plan

Stefan Ostrowski
Response Readiness Supervisor
Western Canada Marine Response Corporation

Stefan Ostrowski:

Our mandate is to have a state of preparedness in place to respond to oil spills and minimize their impact on the environment. We have taken a really collaborative approach with the different communities, the different First Nations, the different government agencies and other groups out there to determine what’s sensitive.

The Department of Fisheries and Oceans will bring information about where marine mammals are located, where their habitats are.

Jocelyn Gardner:

These tools that are provided with the direct response strategies allow responders and WCMRC to be able to respond in a more safe manner, understanding what the current conditions are at those sites, to respond more efficiently to protect those sensitive sites, and allow us to work with the local communities that could be impacted by a spill ahead of time, to understand what is sensitive on the B.C. coast.
