Marine polluter’s responsibilities
If a ship causes any pollution damage and/or need for cleanup, its owner is responsible for the costs. This includes covering any government costs needed to respond to an incident.
Environmental Response works with polluters to come up with a plan to manage response actions. We initiate the response, and manage and sustain the efforts. However, polluters can:
- use their own resources to respond
- hire a private contractor to conduct clean-up efforts
If the polluter is unknown or unable/unwilling to cooperate, we’ll take appropriate actions and manage clean-up efforts. The polluter is still responsible for all costs.
