Apply to the Canadian Coast Guard Officer Training Program: Step 5. What to expect after you apply

Step 5. What to expect after you apply

Our multi-tier process evaluates candidates based on:

  • skills
  • education
  • experience
  • knowledge
  • personal suitability for the role

During the process, you will be expected to:

  • adhere to all deadlines
  • show attention to detail
  • follow instructions carefully
  • respond in a timely manner
  • be available for assessments

If you don’t follow these guidelines, it may result in your application no longer being considered in the selection process.

First, we compare your academic transcripts to the course requirements. You’ll only move forward in the selection process if you’ve completed or are enrolled in the required courses.

If you continue in the process, you’ll be evaluated on the essential and asset qualifications listed in the job notification. Qualifications may be assessed through several methods, including:

  • references
  • an interview
  • a written exam

Applicants must also meet the conditions of employment listed in the job notification. These may include:

  • medical exams
  • a security clearance check
  • ownership of a Canadian passport

Applicants who meet the essential qualifications will be placed in a pool of qualified candidates. You’ll be admitted into the program if you’re selected from the pool. As there may be more qualified applicants than positions available, being placed in the pool doesn’t guarantee a job offer.

Selected applicants usually begin the program in the last week of August.
