Built in 1859, by John Brown, this impressive structure is one of six "imperial towers" constructed in this region of the Great Lakes. The original community here was named Pine Point, and changed to Point Clark after migration of a number of families from Clark Township, East of Toronto. The first lightkeeper and his wife, John and Agnes Young, cared for this structure, and lit the lamp daily, in its early years. This is a treacherous area for mariners. The presence of the light has helped them avoid the perils of the shoal waters off the Point. It is thought that the James C. Carruthers, a 550 feet freighter lost in the Great Storm of 1913, sank in this area. The body of the Captain and some of the crew washed ashore just south of the lighthouse.
