Kincardine's single breakwall and several improvements have made Kincardine Harbour an easier port for entry and to stay over. It's a busy place, close to uptown, and the old lighthouse contains an intriguing museum of local maritime heritage. Be sure to pick up a brochure for local events. There is always something going on!
By car, be sure to turn off Highway 21 and proceed into the downtown area. You can see the harbour and waterfront. It's easy to find your way around.
This unusual building, dating from 1881, is probably one of the most photographed lighthouses along the Huron shoreline. For many years it served to guide sailors and fishermen home to safe harbour. Its function diminished over the years as its usefulness as a navigation aid decreased. Today it functions as part of a range. However it is more significant as a landmark than for any other purpose. The building houses an intriguing museum of marine memorabilia and local waterfront folklore. It is maintained by a community group of interested citizens.
