Commencing at the beginning of the 1997 Great Lakes navigation season, Thunder Bay MCTS Centre entered into an agreement with the Thunder Bay Harbour Commission to undertake a VHF Traffic Information and Advisory Service and support functions related to the navigation of commercial vessels within the Port of Thunder Bay.
The Centre provides this service on VHF channel 12, on behalf of the Commission, to vessels of 40 meters or more in length involved in commercial trade while operating in the Port of Thunder Bay.
General policies and procedures outlining the responsibility of the Commission and vessel operators are contained in the Port of Thunder Bay by-laws.
The Centre also performs support functions associated with the Centres Traffic Information and Advisory Service. This consists of providing a means of public access to vessel location information and supplying specific agencies with vessel movement reports. A voice mail system is used to record the location of all commercial vessels operating in the Port of Thunder Bay. It can be accessed at (807) 345-1256.
