Marine Communications and Traffic Services Centres continously monitor international distress frequencies in order to detect distress or other call indicating the need for assistance.
Upon receipt of a distress call and message, the MCTS Centre will transmit a MAYDAY RELAY message to ensure all ships near the vessel in distress are aware that assistance in immediately required. The MCTS Centre will provide communications services, including the coordination of communications between the vessel in distress, responding air/sea rescue units and the Rescue Coordination Centre, until the distress is resolved.
