MCTS Centres use the identifier consisting of the location of the centre followed by the word "Coast Guard Radio" or "Traffic", e.g. "Prescott Coast Guard Radio". "Coast Guard Radio" is used for all communications except those related to the vessel traffic regulating service.
Calls shall be directed to the appropriate centre name regardless of where the vessel is located within the radio coverage area of that centre. For example, a vessel located near the transmitter site at Tobermory, which is controlled by Thunder Bay MCTS centre, would address the call to "Thunder Bay Coast Guard Radio". The call would be made as follows:
"Thunder Bay Coast Guard Radio, Thunder Bay Coast Guard Radio, this is Sea Fox VC1234, Sea Fox VC1234, over."
If calling on a channel other than 16, identify the channel being used as part of the call.
For a complete listing of the radio channels and frequencies monitored by each MCTS Centre, consult the section entitled VHF Marine Radio Channels or visit the site for a specific MCTS Centre.
Use of a Marine Radio is the most efficient method of alerting the Coast Guard and other boaters to an emergency situation. On the Great Lakes, operators of vessels not equipped with a Marine Radio can use the *16 service to contact the nearest Marine Communications and Traffic Services (MCTS) Centre easily in an emergency. Keying *16 on your Bell Cellular, Cantel or Thunder Bay Cellular telephone, connects you directly to the officer on duty at the MCTS Centre, who will arrange assistance for you.
