Other courses offered under the MCTS department

The MCTS department places emphasis on research and development. It keeps abreast of recent changes in the marine communications world and offers these career development courses to the roughly 350 MCTS officers across the country. These currently include:

1. Refresher Course - Occurring in a five-year cycle, this course is for those already in the marine communications field. Officers from the various regions gather at the Canadian Coast Guard College to share experiences from the field. - This course is presently under review and will not be available before fiscal year 2009 – 2010.

2. Global Maritime Distress and Safety Systems - The Canadian Coast Guard College has been delegated by Industry Canada to offer this course.  This two-week course is for bridge officers to learn the operations of all the new communications equipment that has arrived on-board ships since the 1990s. A training simulator is on site for this course. Those who successfully complete the course receive a General Operator certificate.
