Marine Communications and Traffic Services (MCTS) Candidates Guide

There are five Canadian Coast Guard regions across the country: Newfoundland & Labrador, the Maritimes, Quebec, Central and Arctic and the Pacific. Throughout these regions there are twenty-two Marine Communications and Traffic Services centers. MCTS Officer trainees are hired based on the needs of the regions. The number of trainees varies from year to year.

Application Process

Canadian citizens and permanent residents may apply; preference is given to Canadian citizens. The first step of the application process is the MCTS aptitude test. This general test will determine if the candidate has the skills and knowledge to continue with the selection process. Successful candidates are then invited for an interview and a typing test. A national pool of qualified candidates is established. The regions select their trainees from this pool during its validity. Candidates selected for bilingual positions must meet the Public Service Commission Second Language Evaluation requirements. If selected for a training position, the candidate must sucessfully meet the Health Canada medical and secret security clearance. Once all qualifications have been met, the candidate begins the two-phase training process required to become an MCTS Officer.

1. Phase I
Phase I consists of a 23 week training course completed at the Canadian Coast Guard College. The course consists of theory, practical applications and simulations. The trainee will learn the basics needed to the complete the duties of a MCTS Officer. During this Phase, the trainee is required to stay in the residence of the Canadian Coast Guard College and recieves a training allowance of $350 per week minus $90 for room and board.

2. Phase II
After successful completion of Phase I, the candidate begins the on-the-job training portion of the training program. Working with an on-the-job Instructor, the trainee will learn local geography, local and regional procedures while applying the national elements of the Phase I training. This Phase can last from 3 to 7 months, depending on the MCTS centre.

Upong sucessful completion of both phases of training, the candidate is fully certified, he/she becomes a full time employee of the Canadian Coast Guard, and a Public Service Employee with full benefits.
