The lower level of the marine engineering training facility (machine shop) houses the marine propulsion plant simulator. Here, Officer Cadets find a integrated control room and engine room they could expect to find on a ship. Instructors program the simulator to trigger certain scenarios complete with malfunctions, and then observe the techniques used by the Officer Cadets to solve the situation. The panels on the walls display system status by way of a complex graphical user interface, similar to that of an actual engine room. In the simulator the students must remember and apply all engineering knowledge they have gained. Officer Cadets are required to pass the simulator course to attain ship safety certification. Fourth year Officer Cadets earn the privilege to use the simulator outside of regular class time.
