Icebreaking Program

Samuel Risley

The purpose of the ice breaking program is to keep shipping channels and ports navigable during winter shipping season, to prevent flooding (caused by heavy ice build up on the St. Clair River) and to escort freighters when transiting our frozen lakes. Being at the most southerly point of Ontario, the Amherstburg base is strategically located for this purpose because it is the last area to freeze and the first area to thaw. The main ice breaking vessels that operate in the Great Lakes and rely on support from the Amherstburg base are the CCGS GRIFFON and the CCGS SAMUEL RISLEY.
