Environmental Response

The Amherstburg base serves as an emergency equipment storage depot and a first response/command center. The high level of industrialization surrounding the St. Clair-Detroit River corridor creates a risk to our environment and health, due to the threat of a pollutant being accidentally released into our local waterways. To reduce this risk and increase our chances for a successful spill cleanup, we must respond quickly to any reported marine spills. This response usually involves several steps, from verifying the report, identifying the product and its source, providing equipment, material and personnel for containment, and eventual cleanup of the spill. The Amherstburg base is strategically located to deliver such a response. The Regional Operation Center in Sarnia responds to approximately 15 incidents per year, in the St. Clair-Detroit River corridor.
