Marine Services Fees

Commercial ships operating in Canadian waters (excluding fishing vessels, government ships and pleasure craft) must pay fees to the Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) for certain marine navigation and icebreaking services it provides.

The fees in question — the Marine Navigation Services Fee and the Icebreaking Services Fee — help the CCG recover a portion of the costs associated with providing these services. The fees are based on the premise that those who benefit directly from publicly-funded services should contribute to the cost of those services.

The Marine Navigation Services Fee applies to the following CCG services:

  • Vessel Traffic Services; and
  • Aids to Navigation.

The Icebreaking Services Fee applies to the following CCG services:

  • Route Assistance;
  • Ice Routing;
  • Information Services; and
  • Marine Facility and Port Maintenance.
