College Programs & Specialized Training

  • Are helicopter pilots trained at the College?

We do not train pilots at the CCGC or within the Coast Guard. The training can be done with the Canadian Forces, or with any other schools/organizations providing this training.

Pilots are on loan to the CCG from Transport Canada. Please visit the following site for more information:

    http://www.tc.gc.ca/civilaviation/general/flttrain/menu.htm

  • Are there any programs for students interested in maritime Search and Rescue (SAR)?

The CCG employs post-secondary students enrolled in full-time studies to operate the Inshore Rescue Boat Service at selected sites across Canada during the summer months. Further details on this opportunity can be obtained at the Public Service Commissions Student Workforce Employment Program (FSWEP) Website.

  • After obtaining a marine engineering certification, how long does it take before I can start to train to be part of Search and Rescue?

Further training is dependent on the needs of your assigned region and could be as early as a few months following graduation.

  • I would like to know when the next Marine Electronic Development (MELDEV) training program will be announced and when the course will run

CCG has just completed a MELDEV selection process and the pool has been established for two years, with the possibility of extension. I do not foresee CCG entering another process until 2013/2014. On another note, MELDEV stands for Marine Electronic Development Program, it is a developmental program where a successful candidate is in the program for three years. Where they are supervised and receive on the job training are provided formal training courses and are evaluated continuously to ensure they are meeting the program requirements. The individual is on probation for the entire program.

  • Where can I get my MED training to become a Ships Crew?

For Ships Crew there is a minimum requirement of the STCW Reg. VI/2 Basic Safety Course ( MED A1, B2) and Survival Craft Course ( MED B1) for all employees. In order for an individual to compete in any open competitions, proof of certification is required. Please see the website below for a listing of Canada wide companies/colleges that offer various seagoing training including MED's.

Once you have completed your training please note that all our job opportunities, open to the public, are posted at www.jobs.gc.ca. You can view the advertisement, which will include the “Statement of Merit Criteria” (required qualifications for the job), by going to this website. If you feel you meet the qualifications, you are encouraged to apply on the process. Please note that unsolicited resumes cannot be accepted. You are required to apply directly on-line.

  • I am going to college this year and I was just looking at the Canadian Coast Guard website and saw that they have programs for students for the summer and I am interested in the IRB program. I was just wondering when I should apply for the summer.

To apply to the IRB program you need to go through FSWEP. I am not sure if you are familiar with this site but when you apply you will need to fill out certain requirements and choose which specific programs interest you. The IRB program is one of the programs. The jobs offered through FSWEP are listed as posters and if you meet the requirements you may be invited for an interview. New posters are usually posted at the beginning of November. My best suggestion for you is to create a profile on FSWEP this November, which is the closing date for 2010 posters and create a profile for the new posters coming out.
