  • I am interested in knowing if the Coast Guard employs Registered Nurses and if so what further experience/certifications are necessary?

Our icebreakers carry medical officers on their summer deployments to the Arctic (July - October). Central & Arctic Region coordinates our icebreaker operations in the North and they contract out for medical officer services. In order to provide health care services aboard its vessels, the Canadian Coast Guard recruits Nurse Practitioners or Registered Nurses with advanced nursing practice skills. These Health Care Officers are only required on vessels during arctic and scientific voyages in extremely remote areas. They must have 3-5 years of nursing station experience in an isolated area. Key duties performed under remote supervision include:

    • Provides emergency treatment services
    • Conducts comprehensive physical examination, initiate medical and minor surgical interventions
    • Maintains the security, confidentiality, integrity and legality of client health record and information
    • Provides preventive health services including counseling, health and safety promotion and upon request, assists with ship inspections for potential health and safety hazards.
    • Provision of primary health care, assessment, treatment, referral and follow-up to clients during prolonged periods of duty at sea in remoter locations

The CCG currently have a pool of qualified nurses, but the next postings will be out in 2011. Candidates must apply using the on-line application process in order for their application to be considered. Please visit the PSC website regularly for job offers.
