The Marine Communications and Traffic Services Training Program:
Applicants must first apply for an MCTS Officer training opportunity available through the Public Service Commission (PSC) website. MCTS Officer trainees are hired based on the needs of the five regions, which varies from year to year.
The first step of the selection process is the MCTS aptitude test. Successful candidates are then invited for an interview and a typing test. A national pool of qualified candidates is established. The regions select their trainees from this pool. Once all qualifications have been met, the candidate begins the three-phased training process required to become an MCTS Officer.
Phase I
The MCTS orientation/introduction is completed at one of our 22 MCTS centres within the five regions over a two-week period. A training allowance of $350 per week is paid to the trainee.
Phase II
Phase II consists of a 23-week training course completed at the Canadian Coast Guard College located in Sydney, Nova Scotia.
Phase III
After successful completion of Phase II, the candidate begins the on-the-job training portion of the training program.
Upon successful completion of all phases of training, the candidate is fully certified; he/she then becomes a full-time employee of the Canadian Coast Guard and a Public Service employee with full benefits.
