| As an Electrical Officer, you are responsible for the maintenance of the electrical components of the main propulsion plant, electrical plant, auxiliary machinery, deck machinery, hotel equipment and miscellaneous systems of a CCG vessel. You must know how to read and interpret the various types of shipboard electrical plans and diagrams, and be aware of all the applicable electrical standards. In addition, you must be able to quickly troubleshoot broken electrical equipment and make the necessary repairs. As an Electrical Officer, your role is important for the upkeep of the vessel. Your recommendations on electronic refits, specifications, vessel additions, and alterations have a direct impact on our vessels’ ability to deliver essential services on the water. We are also proud to offer competitive salaries and benefits; immediately upon admission to the CCG College, Officer-Cadets receive a monthly allowance and their pensionable years begin. Once graduated, officers are guaranteed employment. Salary starts at $41,000, and goes up to $100,000 at the highest level. |

Pre-requisites for the above duty:
Applicants must have successfully completed high school and/or a post-secondary program, must be a certified electrician and meet the marine industry standard requirements.
Canadian Coast Guard Electrical Officer certification program:
- External candidates are required to provide evidence of successful completion of studies in a three-year program at a recognized institute of technology. The program shall be at the technologist level in electrical engineering and have been completed within the five years immediately preceding the date of their employment with the CCG; or,
- Successful completion of the following CCG written examinations – Electrical Engineering Knowledge AC/DC, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering General Knowledge and Practical Mathematics.
And all of the following:
- Passing mark in an oral examination;
- 6 months of service aboard a CCG ship in a position of Electrical Officer at the SOMAO- 05 level or higher, and a recommendation from the Chief Engineer(s) of the ship(s) aboard which the time has been served;
- Marine Emergency Duties Certificate; and,
- Valid medical certificate.
