Ships' Crew Positions

Cook 

The Ship’s Cook requires the knowledge and the skills necessary to develop a variety of healthy menus. The Ship’s Cook prepares and carries out the cooking of food on board the vessel. If you have the skills and the motivation to take on this position, you need to know the importance of your role. The cook has not only the responsibility for other staff in the galley (kitchen), but also organizes and manages all activities of the galley and its staff (i.e., the assistant cooks) when required.

Steward 

When accepting a steward position, you are responsible for housekeeping duties on board the vessel as well as assisting with loading of supplies. Stewards are also involved in food service, which entails serving meals and assisting with galley (kitchen) responsibilities. Stewards may also be involved in CCG activities such as search and rescue and environmental response.

Clerk/Storekeeper 

As a Clerk/Storekeeper, you are responsible for the management of the food inventory, which includes interaction with suppliers and shore personnel on a regular basis. You are responsible for providing clerical support for personnel administration, pay and benefits documentation and travel arrangements.

A ship’s crew position in logistics offers competitive salaries and benefits. Salary starts at $45,000, and goes up to $50,000 at the highest level.

Pre-requisites required for the above duties:

Applicants must have successfully completed secondary school (or an approved alternative) and meet the marine industry standard requirements. They must also meet the following requirements:

  1. Marine Emergency Duties
    • Standards for Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping (STCW) Basic safety (six days training)
    • Standards for Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping (STCW) Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue boats (three days training)
  2. Marine Basic First Aid (two days training)
  3. Food Safe Level 1 Certificate (approximately one day training)
  4. Valid Transport Canada Seafarer’s Medical
  5. Security Clearance (*carried out once hired)
  6. Canadian passport an asset

*Please note: A cook’s position may require the candidate possess a Marine Advanced First Aid certificate.
