Aids to navigation are devices or systems, external to a vessel, which are provided to assist a mariner to determine his position and course, to warn him of dangers or obstructions or to advise him of the location of the best or preferred route.
Medium sized, fast (up to 60 knots), multi-taskable vessel which floats on a cushion of air, making it capable of working in very shallow areas (configured for search and rescue, buoy tending, environmental response, and icebreaking in shallow waters).
All elements of machinery and devices which form the non-propulsive equipment.
A facility directly owned and operated by and / or for the Canadian Coast Guard that shelters equipment and personnel and facilitates operations primarily for support of the Canadian Coast Guard (typically either afloat, contiguous to a port or anchorage, consisting of activities or facilities for which the Canadian Coast Guard has operating responsibilities, together with interior lines of communication and the minimum surrounding area necessary for local security).
Specially designed ship to move and navigate through ice-covered waters that has a strengthened hull, an ice-clearing shape and the power to push through.
Marine Emergency Duties (MED) certification aims to provide all seafarers with the basic understanding of the hazards associated with the marine environment and their own vessel, as well as with inspecting and maintaining all emergency equipment.
All elements of equipment including each component that is necessary for propulsion, affects the control of the major propulsion units or affects the safety of the major propulsion units. It includes control systems, thrusters, rudders and stabilization systems. It also includes items that are mounted on or are directly applicable to propulsion systems such as gearbox lubrication, intake and exhaust systems, engine enclosures and enclosure ventilation systems.
The PSC provides services and products to four key groups:
The systematic use of information to identify hazards and estimate the chance for, and severity of, injury or loss.
The Restricted Operator’s Certificate – Maritime Commercial (ROC-MC) is a Government of Canada issued certificate required for the operation of a marine VHF radio.
The Standards for Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping is an international standard for ensuring mariners across the globe have the skills and abilities to serve aboard seagoing vessels.
Transport Canada is responsible for transportation policies and programs. It ensures that air, marine, road and rail transportation are safe, secure, efficient and environmentally responsible.
