Captain Denis Coulombe entered the Canadian Coast Guard College in 1980 and graduated as a navigational officer in June 1983. He has served continuously in the Quebec Region of the Coast Guard since that time.
Until 1989, he was assigned principally to various icebreakers. The following year, upon receiving his certificate as a commanding officer, he took up his first post as chief officer, and later as commanding officer. As his experience grew, so too did the size of vessels under his command.
Captain Coulombe stepped aboard the CCGS Des Groseilliers as its commanding officer in 2003, a position he has proudly and ably filled since that time.
One of the highlights of his career occurred in the 1990s, when he participated in the marine scientific research mission Sheba. That mission represented a Canadian first, in which the vessel spent the entire year in the High Arctic.
