Coast Guard currently uses a Geographic Information System (GIS) based software to generate static 3D models of the channel and river bottom. The bathymetry modelling is used to assist in the planning and management of dredging activities. Modelling allows us to monitor sedimentation by comparing different data models to show the areas of fill and scour, and to compute the volume differences between the two data sets.
A new initiative is to incorporate a dynamic 2D model of the Lower Fraser River as a management tool to enhance the water depth forecasts, model river flow and velocities to better understand sedimentation; and to help analyse changes and impacts that may have resulted from navigation and dredging activities on the river.
