Description
This course teaches the navigational techniques used and skills required to navigate a vessel safely in coastal waters. Cadets gain practical experience by completing a series of chart work problems and practical exercises. Topics covered in this course include:
- keeping a log
- navigating in confined waters
- the Canadian buoyage system
- passage planning and anchoring
- knowledge of up-to-date publications
- determining and plotting a ship's position using:
- landmarks
- aid to navigation, including:
- buoys
- beacons
- lighthouses
- dead reckoning, taking into account:
- tides
- winds
- currents
- estimated speed
