Description

This course teaches the navigational techniques used and skills required to navigate a vessel safely in coastal waters. Cadets gain practical experience by completing a series of chart work problems and practical exercises. Topics covered in this course include:

  • keeping a log
  • navigating in confined waters
  • the Canadian buoyage system
  • passage planning and anchoring
  • knowledge of up-to-date publications
  • determining and plotting a ship's position using:
    • landmarks
    • aid to navigation, including:
      • buoys
      • beacons
      • lighthouses
    • dead reckoning, taking into account:
      • tides
      • winds
      • currents
      • estimated speed
