Description

This course is an introduction to nautical charts and their use. Cadets gain practical experience by completing a series of chart work problems and practical exercises. Topics covered in this course include:

  • keeping a log
  • navigating in confined waters
  • the Canadian buoyage system
  • knowledge and use of publications
  • determining and plotting a ship’s position using:
    • landmarks
    • aid to navigation, including:
      • buoys
      • beacons
      • lighthouses
    • dead reckoning, taking into account:
      • tides
      • winds
      • currents
      • estimated speed
