Course hours

This course covers various types of cargo vessels and their cargoes. Topics covered in this course include:

general knowledge of:
- tankers and tanker operations
- operational and design limitations of bulk carriers
correct procedures for cargo and bulk cargo:
- ballast
- security
- stowage
- handling
- transport
- loading and unloading
handling dangerous, hazardous and harmful cargoes
interpreting given figures for bending and shear forces
avoiding detrimental effects to bulk carriers caused by:
- fatigue
- corrosion
- inadequate cargo handling
international regulations, standards and codes, including:
- International Maritime Dangerous Goods code
- International Maritime Solid Bulk Cargoes code
- recommendations on carriage of dangerous cargoes
- the Code of Safe Practice for Cargo Stowage and Securing
effective communications and improving working relationships
