Description

This course covers various types of cargo vessels and their cargoes. Topics covered in this course include:

  • general knowledge of:
    • tankers and tanker operations
    • operational and design limitations of bulk carriers
  • correct procedures for cargo and bulk cargo:
    • ballast
    • security
    • stowage
    • handling
    • transport
    • loading and unloading
  • handling dangerous, hazardous and harmful cargoes
  • interpreting given figures for bending and shear forces
  • avoiding detrimental effects to bulk carriers caused by:
    • fatigue
    • corrosion
    • inadequate cargo handling
  • international regulations, standards and codes, including:
    • International Maritime Dangerous Goods code
    • International Maritime Solid Bulk Cargoes code
    • recommendations on carriage of dangerous cargoes
    • the Code of Safe Practice for Cargo Stowage and Securing
  • effective communications and improving working relationships
