Description

This course consists of the theoretical and practical aspects of basic nautical astronomy required to calculate, plot and maintain position and course. Topics covered in this course include:

  • twilight times
  • celestial spheres
  • the solar system
  • navigating in high latitudes
  • the rising and setting of the sun
  • determining a ship's position using:
    • celestial bodies
    • great circle sailing
    • parallel, plane and mercator sailing
