Marine Communications and Traffic Services

Marine Communications and Traffic Services are provided in the Maritimes Region from three different centres. These centres are located in Halifax and Sydney, Nova Scotia, and at Saint John, New Brunswick. The full range of MCTS Services are provided including; Distress, Safety Communications/Coordination; Offshore Vessel Screening; Regulating Vessel Traffic Movements; Integrated Marine Information Systems; and providing Public Correspondence. There are four Vessel Traffic Services Zones in Maritimes Region, namely, Halifax, Strait of Canso and Eastern Approaches, Northumberland Strait and the Bay of Fundy.

The three MCTS centres work closely with the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre Halifax during distress incidents. There is also a close working relationship with the Regional Operations Centre.
