Biographical Information: Born in Scotland, Sir William Alexander was the First Earl of Stirling, and was knighted in 1614. In 1621, King James I granted him a royal charter, appointing him mayor of a vast territory which was enlarged into a lordship and barony of New Scotland the area now known as Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and part of the northern United States. In this position he was instrumental in developing colonies at Port Royal, Nova Scotia and Long Island. These colonies became the foundation for New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and New York.
