The Environmental Response program maintains a marine preparedness and response service capability throughout the Maritimes Region. There are four Environmental Response Depots in the region, located in Charlottetown, Dartmouth, Saint John and the Canso Canal that respond to around 200 oil pollution incidents per year. There are also 17 equipment depots throughout the region. This program forms part of a system capable of responding to oil pollution incidents not only regionally, but also on a national basis, as well as contributing to international incidents if requested. The responsibilities of this program are stated as: contingency planning; training; exercising; response, and research and development.
Three of Canada's four private sector environmental response organizations are located within the region.
